Speech & Debate Team Competes in Freehold Tournament

          Elaine Wang ‘20
On January 11, members of Lawrenceville’s Speech and Debate team competed at the Freehold Township High School Debate Tournament, which included a multitude of events such as Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum at the varsity, junior varsity, and novice levels.
Five Lawrentians attended the competition: Alistair Lam ‘23 and Daniel Zhu ‘23 as a team in Novice Public Forum, and Bill Luo ‘22, Arthur Li ‘22, and Richard Zhou ‘22 in Varsity Lincoln Douglas. Competitors tackled the question of U.S. sanctions against Venezuela and the global issue of nuclear weapons, evaluating the resolutions from both sides during the day.
Team coach Haleigh Gundy, a sophomore at Princeton University, and Elaine Wang ‘20 judged debates and helped the competitors in between rounds to adapt to new evidence and strategies.
Congratulations to Li for coming in fourth and Luo for placing fifth in the Varsity Lincoln Douglas event and to all participants for attending a very competitive tournament. Regardless of their results, all members of the team hope to continue in this tournament next year, with even better results after a year of training and growth. Many more opportunities are lined up in for the rest of January and February and the practice will certainly translate to future success.
The club meets on Thursday and Friday nights to engage in mock debates and review cases. Interested students should reach out to one of the three presidents, Wang, Vince Huang ‘20, or Ivanna Tavarez ‘20, for more information.
